Kylie Jenner’s hair transformations are legendary, and one of her latest looks had a little help from a mythical creature that rules Pinterest: the unicorn. Jenner’s hairstylist Chris Appleton pulled back the shimmering curtain when he tweeted the secret to her “Barbie blonde” tresses: Lime Crime’s $16 Unicorn Hair tints.
U.S. beauty company Lime Crime has been creating “makeup for unicorns” since 2008, and its offerings expanded into hair color with its suitably named Unicorn Hair products that you can purchase online or at a number of select retailers, including Bloomingdales and Ulta Beauty.
Vegan and cruelty-free
Kylie Jenner announced in 2017 that she was going vegan, and Lime Crime fits right in with her conscientious lifestyle. Its products are all 100-percent vegan and cruelty-free and have received the stamp of approval from PETA and Leaping Bunny. Unicorn Hair products are glycerin-based, and each ingredient that they contain is confirmed vegan.
Twenty-one-year-old Jenner is no stranger to the otherworldly Lime Crime brand; back in September 2018 her hairstylist used Lime Crime’s Unicorn Hair in Hiawatha, Bunny and Dilute to turn her hair a luscious millennial pink.
Mix it up to your unicorn-heart’s desire
With Unicorn Hair, your creativity is the limit. You can use a single color or mix them to create unique hues. If you’d like a little help coming up with combinations, Lime Crime recommends mixing Bubblegum Rose with Neon Peach for luscious, peachy-pink hair color. You can achieve a cool slate gray by blending Dirty Mermaid with On Mute.
Hair guru Appleton says that he mixed Lime Crime’s Unicorn Hair in Tweet, which is a canary yellow, with Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Mixer in Dilute. Dilute is a silvery-purple tone that will lighten any color that you mix it with. On Mute is Unicorn Hair’s other mixer that you can use to give the color of your choice a pleasingly muddy, grungy look.
Lime Crime’s colors will be the most vibrant if you apply them over hair that’s been lightened with bleach, like Jenner’s. You don’t need to use heat when coloring with Unicorn Hair; just let the color sit on your locks for 30 minutes. Let it sit longer for more intense results. Appleton says he left Jenner’s color on for 45 minutes. Then, rinse your hair with lukewarm water. You can help your semi-permanent color last as long as possible by always going a few days in-between washes. If you’d like the color to fade, wash your hair often and use clarifying shampoo.
Non-damaging formulations
Lime Crime hair tints and full-coverage colors don’t contain any damaging chemicals, so they’re gentle on bleached hair. Mane man Appleton claims that the Unicorn Hair formulas made Jenner’s hair “look beautiful and feel like silk.”
You can apply Lime Crime’s Unicorn Hair on dark tresses without bleaching your hair first, but expect to see just a touch of color. Choose their full-coverage products if you’re using color on hair that’s dark blonde or light brown. Some top-selling colors in the full-coverage Unicorn Hair line include Blue Smoke, Sea Witch, Pony Hair and Anime. Providing 10 years of whimsical self-expression
Lime Crime is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The company was recently bought by Tengram Capital Partner, and a new CEO, Stacy Panagakis, is at its helm, but the brand’s devotion to all things bright, sparkly and kind is as strong as ever. To celebrate their 10-year milestone, Lime Crime brought back five iconic shades of their Instagram-favorite Unicorn Lipstick and added seven new shades. The limited-edition birthday set is packaged in throw-back purple holographic packaging.
Lime Crime has also put out an awe-inspiring palette of rainbow-themed eyeshadows for their 10th anniversary. The palette contains 14 colors with various finishes, including iridescent shimmer, shimmer, matte sparkle and glow.
