The Philadelphia Phillies are on a roll, with a five-game winning streak currently in progress. The team picked up their latest win on Sunday night thanks to Asdrubal Cabrera’s bat late in a game against the Miami Marlins. Not only did they win the game, but also the series against the National League foe.
As The Inquirer reported on Sunday, Cabrera smacked a two-run home run out of the park in the eighth inning. It was the difference maker in a 5-3 win over the Marlins in their final game of the series at Citizens Bank Park. Cabrera was acquired back on July 27 from the New York Mets and finally proved to be a valuable acquisition.
The Phillies had been holding onto a three-run lead, but the Marlins managed to tie things up. The Phillies got on the board first in the sixth inning with a two-run double from Odubel Herrera. Maikel Franco followed that up by hitting a shot to shallow left to bring Herrera home. In the seventh, Miami came right back with two home runs. Derek Dietrich struck first with a 382-foot shot to score both himself and Isaac Galloway. Several batters later, Justin Bour hit a shot to center field to make it 3-3.
However, the man Philadelphia recently traded for, just nine days ago, came through in the eighth with a 418-foot blast to right. It was Cabrera’s second home run in four games and 20th of the season. After the game, Cabrera told reporters, “When you do something like I did today to help the team win, you feel good,” per ESPN’s report.
Pat Nehsek was on for the Phillies in the eighth inning and recorded his first win of the season while Tommy Hunter picked up his second save. Taking the loss for the Marlins was Drew Steckenrider who gave up the home run to Cabrera. The game also honored the Philadelphia Phillies’ 2008 World Series-winning team, giving fans inspiration for a potential championship a decade later. The latest team is certainly playing very well and looking towards the postseason.
The win moved Philadelphia to 63-48 overall and 38-18 at their home park. They continue to lead the National League East division with a 1.5-game difference over the Atlanta Braves. The Marlins dropped to 46-67 with the loss.
Next up for the Phillies is an away game on Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks beginning at 9:40 p.m. Eastern Time. Philadelphia ace Jake Arrieta (9-6, 3.32 ERA) will be on the mound with Arizona starting Zack Goodley (12-6, 4.46 ERA) for the contest.
