The St. Louis Cardinals suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night. However, the Cardinals were able to get some revenge on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies built up a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals would then explode for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead. The Phillies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Phillies manager Gabe Kapler has overcome some adversity early in the season. There were many fans and members of the media who were calling for Kapler to be fired. That did not happen. He was allowed the time he needed to get his team on track. They are playing very well right now. The problems they experienced early in the season seem like they happened a long time ago.
One of the biggest additions the Phillies made was signing Jake Arrieta as a free agent from the Chicago Cubs. He has pitched very well and helped to solidify a very young Phillies pitching staff. Arrieta was not signed until very late in March. He admitted that things worked out for the best. He enjoyed his time in the Windy City. However, he said it was simply time to go. He likes the atmosphere of the Phillies clubhouse. He is fond of his new teammates. He honestly believes that the Phillies can make a playoff run if they stay healthy and a few things go their way. It remains to be seen if that will be the case.
The Cardinals were very excited about their win on Tuesday night. Matt Carpenter also had a double that knocked in two runs in addition to his home run that provided the margin of victory. The Cardinals know that the Cubs and the Brewers will be tough for the rest of the season. However, they are confident that they have the talent to get past those teams and win the division title. It will be a huge accomplishment if the Cardinals are able to pull that off.
