The 2018-19 NBA season was a very good one for the Philadelphia 76ers. During the season the team took a very big step forward as many of their key pieces were finally able to stay on the court together. While the team had spent several years rebuilding and at times looked like they would never achieve greatness, many people are finally optimistic about the future of the franchise.
During the season, Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and Dario Saric all looked like they could be perennial All-Stars that can lead the team to multiple NBA championships. The regular season ended with the team winning their last 16 games and the 76ers ended up securing the number 3 seed in the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs. They then were able to defeat the Miami Heat in 5 games before moving on to the second round where they ultimately lost to the Boston Celtics.
During the second round series, it was clear that the 76ers still are at least one or two players away from becoming as dominant as they can be. While the free agency and offseason period is still over one month away, there are many teams and fans that are speculating that the 76ers could be in a great position to make a very bold trade (https://thesixersense.com/2018/05/21/philadelphia-76ers-how-trade-kawhi-leonard-cap-space/)
One of the biggest rumors is that the 76ers will be able to trade for Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs. The 76ers are one of the few teams in the league that has the cap space available to make the trade and sign him to a long-term extension. To get Leonard, the team will likely have to part ways with some role players, but overall it would be a great addition to the team.
If they team is able to make this trade it would be a huge move for the entire franchise. For the past few season Leonard has been considered one of the top players in the NBA and he has a great reputation for being good on offense and defense. Leonard for a long time looked like he would be a career member of the Spurs, but he has recently separated himself from the team and it now appears likely that he will not be playing in San Antonio anymore. At the same time, the 76ers may also pursue Paul George or LeBron James in free agency this offseason.
